Meredith
Heartless bitch? Funny, considering I'm going into social work...
Wait. No. Not funny at all. In fact, it's perfectly appropriate. Being a
heartless bitch, to me, means standing up against bullshit--both against
individuals and more systemic bullshit--that seeks to keep people from
achieving fulfilling, vibrant lives. It means being confident and
passionate enough about fairness and basic human rights to call other
people on their hypocrisy when they try to abuse others. And, perhaps
most importantly, it's not about negativity, man-hating, or ANYONE
hating, for that matter-- it's about positivity: pursuing truth and
dealing realistically with the crap that life throws at all of us in
order to maybe get past that and lead more fulfilling lives.
I've definitely spent a lot of time and energy in my life trying to
please others, trying to find fulfillment in traditional ways, and
trying to please others in some convoluted way of finding fulfillment.
It doesn't fucking work. My friend summed it up best when I was in the
throes of despair over something that truly wasn't even important: "Mer,
don't let this steal your joy." In order to get back to a state of
unadulterated joy, I had to be courageous, ballsy (ovary-y?) and
generally badass enough to say, aw hell no. Being a heartless bitch is
more about saying fuck no to the bullshit that tries to inundate our
lives in order to enjoy the basics, and less about getting inordinately
angry and consumed in said bullshit.
Being a heartless bitch is about positivity. It's about believing we can
have whatever we want-- and that we're not bad people for demanding the
best out of life.
