Hawk
It may be hard to believe that I, as a man, have actually been called a
"Heartless Bitch." It wasn't meant as a compliment, although I took it
as such. My sin was that I refused to help someone who wouldn't help
himself.
Oh yeah, I am heartless in that I don't solve problems for
others. I am a sociologist and I find it amazing that my students hear
me telling them about feminist theory, about dignity and self-reliance,
and then presume to argue that the world is no longer sexist or racist,
that it is not a misogynistic society. They seem to think that I am
making it all up!
People seem so caught up in the dominant culture's
view of gender roles that they seem to be actually blinded to the
reality. Perhaps it's the "can't see the forest for the trees" issue.
Maybe it's because when one ray of radical light enters your world, it
makes you question everything you thought was real.
Women try to
manipulate males by flipping on the cute and helpless switch. Men
swagger like John Wayne with a wolverine up his ass, impressing us all
with their toughness. They are self-parodies, poster children for the
superficiality of our culture. I am a Heartless Bitch for pointing out
their hypocrisy and that they seem to be so comfortable in their
superficiality and blindness, such willing and compliant victims. It is
so much easier to portray yourself as mindless than to take
responsibility for your thoughts and actions.
I am a Heartless Bitch for
not allowing male students to wear tee shirts with sexist logos in my
classes. Why would they do this when they know the class is based on
feminist theory. Would they be so quick to wear tee shirts with racist
epitaphs? These are, of course, the same young "men" who giggle
uncontrollably when the conversation turns to sexuality. I suppose I am
a Heartless Bitch for noting aloud that the twittering seems of the
nervous and uncomfortable variety as opposed to a true expression of
amusement.
I am the Heartless Bitch that, when cutesy giggly female
students have come to my office to advise me that they "would do
ANYTHING for a passing grade" in a course, has answered, "ANYTHING??
then STUDY!" Not particularly original but apparently they hadn't heard
it before because I have been called "heartless", "bitch" and even "Gay"
(oh Heaven forbid!) in response to that suggestion. In short (yeah, I
know...too late), I am a Heartless Bitch because I am unwilling to help
those who will not help themselves.
I have no tolerance for idiots,
willing victims and selfish emotional parasites, male or female. Any
observer of society must realize that idiocy, sexism, racism, or any
other "ism" that plagues our society is not the exclusive domain or any
race, class or gender. Following that observation, one's gender, or
their cuteness, does qualify one for a break from me. Thanks for
considering me.
