Marie
At the ripe old age of 31 I've begun to realize that while I still may be a radical, I am not a "bleeding heart liberal" anymore. I have now spent 3 years as a social worker for people with HIV/AIDS. I have witnessed the very best and worst of humanity and have come to the conclusion that there is no excuse for not accepting responsibility for your life. I have seen far too many of my clients give up their power over themselves in order to spend the rest of their short days whining about their misery, their miserable lives and how the world is against them. But I have also witnessed several of my clients turn their diagnosis into a reason to better their lives and start living with true purpose and decisiveness. As a result, I can no longer accept whining and self-pity from myself or others. Hell, I'm perfectly healthy and don't have to take 25 pills a day to stay alive! I have no right to feel sorry for myself! Of course this means that I am less than sympathetic to self describ
ed victims and their enablers but as far as I'm concerned they don't need my sympathy. They need a swift kick in the ass and as a care provider I would be doing them a disservice not to provide that. I care about every single one of my friends, clients and family members but if they expect me to join them in their sick, co-dependent habits then they are in for a surprise.
Also, despite the fact that it is no longer considered hip or PC, I still define myself as a feminist. To me feminism is a philosophy that holds that women are human beings and are therefore deserving of the same basic respect and dignity as anyone else. We are no better or worse than men nor are we more or less valuable.
