I refuse to listen to acquaintances who whine over everything, but do nothing. This frequently pisses them off, because I am, in general, known as a person who is a good listener, and who only offers advice if asked. Yes, for friends who are, say, unemployed but job hunting, getting over a broken heart because they dumped the loser, grieving over the loss of a family member or pet. These are the ones I will listen to, and try to help if needed. I have no tolerance for idiots who are bored or never meet interesting people or never get to go anywhere because they won't take the initiative to go out with anyone, meet new people, or plan things to do. I tell them to "get off your lazy butt and do something, and for God's sake, don't whine to me about how hard life is. Go to a third world country if you want to see a hard and frequently futile life. THAT is pain, in ways we can't begin to envision. Can't find a perfect 10? Of course not, you're a three. Don't like your job? Go back to school. Don't like your roommates? Save money and buy your own place. Boyfriend or girlfriend won't commit? Break up." No one can argue with me, because I went back to school, got a new, wonderful job, bought my own place, (not easy) and ended a three-year relationship with someone who suddenly needed to "find himself, but still be friends." We are promised the PURSUIT of happiness, not happiness itself. Get a grip, and get a life, is my advice to whiners.
