You know, normally, I'm an easy-going person. I try to be a good person
(that doesn't always entail being a "nice" person, of course), and,
roughly about 85-90% of the time, I try to keep a cool head.
However, there are some things in this world that just piss me off.
It pisses me off that, no matter how hard I work, I will never earn as
much as my male colleagues who work just as hard, and that the
profession I'm currently aiming for, being a "pink-collar" job (I'm
going for my Library and Information Science degree), will never be
valued as much as doctors, lawyers, or other "male" jobs.
It pisses me off that Time magazine considers "Ally McBeal" a feminist
show.
It pisses me off that my right to an abortion is ceasing to exist as I
type this. It likewise pisses me off that, in parts of China and India,
that same right is being abused, as couples abort female fetuses so they
can try again for a male child.
It pisses me off that I cannot become a priest in the religion in which
I was raised, simply because Jesus and the Apostles had penises and I
don't.
It pisses me off that many of the people currently in power condemn
dual-career, single parent, or same-sex parent families in favor of a
"traditional nuclear family" that never really existed. If the Fifties
were so great, why did alcoholism and tranquilizer use skyrocket among
American housewives during that period? Why did teen pregnancy
skyrocket, too?
It pisses me off that people advocate "traditional family values" when
REAL traditional family values included wife and child beating.
It pisses me off when people use the Bible as an excuse to hate gays,
kill abortion providers, and treat women like children. It pisses me off
when people use other religious texts the same way (e.g., the Koran).
Howard Stern doesn't piss me off. Rush Limbaugh does.
I enjoy Take Back the Night marches. However, it pisses me off that we
still need to have them.
It pisses me off that the word "slut" is still acceptable to use in
public. I find the word nearly as offensive as the word "nigger."
It pisses me off when people look at me as though I have three heads
whenever I tell them I minored in Women's Studies in college.
Finally, it pisses me off that all women aren't as pissed off as I am.
So many of them don't seem to realize what's really at stake here:
either they've grown too complacent, they're fighting against the wrong
thing (oh, please, do you really think rap lyrics are keeping women
down? Get real), or they just don't care. Some of them don't even vote,
for Christ's sake! What a nice way to express your gratitude to the
Suffragettes who protested, underwent hunger strikes (and subsequent
forcefeedings through a tube by police), and fought against Victorian
Era misogyny just for your right to vote!
Finally, men don't piss me off. I love 'em, actually; many of my heroes
are male. Women don't piss me off, either. However, stupidity pisses me
off, and stupidity knows no sex. Unfortunately, there's so much of it
floating around, clogging up people's minds like so much raw sewage,
that I've no choice but to be a Heartless Bitch.
