I enjoy making all of the right people uncomfortable. For example, I am multi-
racial, and people constantly try to categorize me into one ethnic group or
another (usually placing me in the predominating minority group of a particular
environment, i.e., Middle Eastern in the Colleges of Science or Engineering at
my school, Latina in some neighborhoods, etc.) When these individuals act
surprised that I am able to understand English and therefore their racial
slurs, and I have more than one set of (stereotypical) traits (yes! I can do
math and I am a girl. Yes! I am Asian and hip, and I am African American and
well-read.)
Without fail some (usually white, usually male) idiot will try to make a comment
to prove that "they are down" with my race. My favorite example: an upper
middle class, conservative white male working for a large defense entity
complaining (using ebonics) about how "'The Man' has got him down; in return he
gets a blank stare and the comment, 'Dude, you ARE the Man.'"
I am disabled but do not suffer the insipid, patronizing fawning of the
clueless. I am not "precious". Because one part of me does not function the
same way as yours, that does not mean that everything on me is broken (i.e., I
may be partially deaf but I can still read your damn lips: quit talking about me
like I am three years old or your new puppy). Do not tell me I am some sort of
hero because I get out of bed and make it through each day without killing
myself.
