I'm a Heartless Bitch because I'm assertive, confident and outspoken, and I am so fed up with men (and women) interpreting these qualities as indicators that I'm full of myself and think I'm better than everyone else. My identity as a black woman, paired with my self-confidence, has also led many to label me as an Angry Black Woman. I am a Heartless Bitch because I choose to reclaim this label in a more self empowering way, one indicating my personal strength and insight into the socio-political obstacles in place keeping me down as a woman of color, and my resistance to these. I am a Heartless Bitch because I'm fed up with society refusing to accept the co-existence of femininity and strength of character (traditionally characterized as male traits), in women. I am a Heartless Bitch because I am tired of men going off of their own insecurities to criticize my confidence in myself. And I am sick of men turning these strengths into deficiencies as a means of making themselves feel better, which ultimately only serves to maintain men as the sole detainors of such values, whereby also perpetuating the socially dictated characteristics of the overly sensitive, helpless female. Thus, serving to uphold male social hegemony.
