I was brought up in a family that appreciated me for my creativity and
intelligence and was surprised at the disrespect I received from the
rest of the world as an adolescent. At first I took it with a grain of
salt and assumed that I would just have to build the structure of my
life around the assumed social norm. I lost a great deal of self-esteem
during my first couple of teen years and regained them after reading
"The Feminine Mystique," "Reviving Ophelia," and other great books
written from female ideals. I regained confidence and am now able to see
myself as a person again. I have aspirations just like everyone
else--and I'm sick of being told that I can't be happy without a man. It
makes me want to cry and scream whenever I see a woman being put down
and giggling about it. Fuck you. I've got a life of my own, and I don't
remember inviting YOU into it.
