Several years ago while working as a service technician in a previously male-dominated (!) field, I dyed my hair from blonde to brunette and the opinions of strangers (men and women... in fact, more women than men) regarding my intelligence, competence, and so on (reflected in my job performance assessments) skyrocketed. These were random samples--the job performance wasn't different, only the perceptions of the customers had changed. It was disgusting. How much smarter would I appear to be if I had cut off my breasts? Or had actually been a male to start with!

Here are my personal rules:

1. No tolerance for deliberate ignorance.
2. No prejudice towards native ignorance if steps are taken to remedy it.
3. No one is allowed to dictate to me my choice of friends (especially not my other friends.)
4. No one is allowed to dictate to me my opinions.
5. Don't offer me your opinion unless you can support it.
6. I am not required to remedy your ignorance.
7. I am fully responsible for my own problems.
8. I'm not the slightest bit responsible for your problems.
9. Whatever your maladjustment, get over it and dedicate yourself to making a positive difference in the world!
