I'm a Heartless Bitch because I'm not willing to compromise my
principles in order to avoid confrontation. If you grab my ass, don't
expect to get away with it. If you make a racist joke, don't expect a
laugh. More importantly, as an activist I spend my time fighting those
who attempt to deny equal rights, benefits, and dignity to those of us
who aren't rich, white, male, and/or straight. We live in a capitalist
society which breeds oppression, and the only way to do anything about
it is to organize.
I work as a counselor at an abortion clinic, and
every day I see women who are suffering because of the so-called
"morality" which tells women that our choices are not valid and that our
bodies are not ours to control. I work to give them support in a world
all too happy to deny it to them, and because I am aware that "choice"
is only an option when there are people willing to staff clinics and
make that choice a reality.
Being a Heartless Bitch isn't about whining; it's about organizing. Man
hating is useless; after all, most men, especially working-class men,
suffer as a result of sexism. It's also crucial to connect sexism with
racism, homophobia, and of course capitalism.
