When my mom went into labor with me, my dad told her he didn't have enough gas to drive her to the hospital. I was her first kid, and she had been in Spain for most of her pregnancy, and hadn't received much in the way of prenatal care. So she was scared, but she walked 8 miles through the Puerto Rican ghetto in California, where she was living at the time, to get to the hospital to deliver me. On the way, she became a Heartless Bitch, and that's how I was birthed.
Still, just because one's momma is a Heartless Bitch, doesn't mean that one will *stay* a Heartless Bitch. Her and her dad, my "poppa", raised me up, and I was lucky enough to see a strong woman and a man who was not afraid of her strength through all those early formative years.
Random "Why-I'm-a-Heartless-Bitch" Bio Facts:
~ I worked with the ACLU to sue my high school principal when he censored a literary magazine I edited. We won.
~ I'm an Indian (feather, not dot), and the only time anyone ever made a racist comment toward me, I slashed his arm open with a butterfly knife.
~ I'm not afraid to tell the gynecologist/GP/tattoo artist that it hurts too much, do it differently, or "I don't want that." (I have talked to a few women who are afraid of saying, "It hurts". Insert exclamation point... I hate how they look.)
~ I'm a woman artist at a time when women artists have not only the disadvantage of being undervalued by society that all artists have, but the added disadvantage of knowing that no matter how hard I work, how talented I am, how many times I publish, every man in the same position will make 75% more than me. I have to live with trying, every day, not to think of this before I create. And remember to think of it after.
~ I know my women's history and feminist theory and all those other second-waver sorts of things, but I still really like having smooth legs and lipstick and a nice big cock once in a while.
