I had a boyfriend once who tried to guilt me out of going overseas as an exchange student by threatening to commit suicide. I looked at him, smiled sweetly, and said, "Honey, make sure you slice UP the wrists, not across, and do it in the tub so your Mommy doesn't have a huge mess to clean up afterwards." I dumped his sorry ass, went anyway, had a fabulous time and learned a lot about other cultures.
Current situation: I work in technical support for an ISP. I get calls where some man asks to speak to a technician, since I am female and answered the phone, I must be a secretary. I tell them that this is the direct line to technical support, and he is speaking to a senior tech. The ones who insist on speaking to a man get hung up on... Sir, you called technical support, I'll just put you back in the queue and you can take your chances that the next person who picks up the phone will be a male. He might even be as technically astute as I.
I don't let anyone put any crap over on me anywhere, at work or home. I'm the meanest mommy on the face of the earth because I make my son clean his room, do dishes, pick up after himself, put his clothes in the hamper and generally make him behave in a self-sufficient manner. I tell my husband exactly what he's done that's pissed me off, and I don't screw around about it. He damn well KNOWS when he's in the shit house with me. (He lets me know when I'm in the shit house too.)
I also don't let the pasty-faced boys I work with put anything over on me either. If they leave the break room a mess, I get on their asses about it, because I was NOT hired to clean up after anyone, make the damn coffee, or keep inventory of the utensils. I'm also not getting paid to do technical writing, so when my boss asks me to do that crap, I tell him so as well.
