I don't know how to be anything else.

I was 9 when my parents divorced. My mother was not used to making any decisions, therefore, she started relying on me. I made a lot of decisions from an early age and grew up rather fast.

And found out that I like it that way!

I later learned about the existentialism (high school stuff in my country) where the philosophy is that you have to make all decisions yourself. Even if you don't choose, you choose to let somebody else make your choice. Furthermore, you are given a set of circumstances and conditions, which can only be changed to a certain extent. But you also have to choose these conditions. In other words: You and your life is solely your own responsibility. This was a large part of my early foundation.

Since then I have of course made many, many decisions - from toilet paper brands to abortions. I have not always made the right decision - after all I'm not gifted with foresight (which would also be boring); but looking back on the important ones I always made the best decision under the given circumstances, being the person I was at that time.

The ability to stand up for myself and not give in to other people's preconceptions is very useful during my everyday work as an engineer (chemical). Especially the years I spent on an oilrig (offshore and on-shore) which proves that I can work under any conditions. And if I can, it is not impossible for anybody else.

I sincerely hope that I will continue to make my own decisions as my grandmother (85) is still very much doing.
