I qualify as a Heartless Bitch because I am the driving force in my own life, do not play the daughter or girlfriend role (except with my mom and my husband), and deplore namby-pambyness in all of its forms. I am "the bitch from Portland", "wolf-woman", "difficult to know", "socially awkward", and have "personality quirks", according to several male scientists, many of whom seem quite civilized. Other people in my life do not share these perceptions. Needless to say, such assessments do not help me in my career search. To be frank, I am tired of never quite fitting in because I am not a beautiful soul from Venus. It seems that I pay a high price for not playing by a set of rules that I never learned and would morally disapprove of anyway. I will not do all of that extra work in conversations, smoothing ruffled feathers, assuming the one-down position and deferring to others at all times. I don't do that high- piched, smiley "hiiiiyy!!" when I meet a woman I know. I do not covet babies. I am not a nurterer, though I can and do love. I have never acted dumb for love, and can't even imagine doing so. Why is this such a crime?
