I guess we're never too old to
learn... until now I thought I was pretty much alone in my opinions about
our societies gender roles. I'm a 45 year old grandmother, and have
been in a "non traditional" career for the last 20 yrs. I'm a
journey(wo)man Pipefitter/Plumber - the one and only in my plant. I've
taken a lot of crap from the women - as much if not more than from the
guys, but I persevere because I've refused to "lay down and play dead".
The only thing which has stood between me and my children and poverty is
the fact that God blessed me with a strong mind and body and the gumption
to go after a job that has provided us with a comfortable lifestyle....not
to mention the health care benefits that so many are without these days. It
doesn't help matters being an attractive woman; I find so many men who
can't get past my physical appearance long enough to notice that I have a
BRAIN... which is really sad. When I had finished my schooling to become a
journeyman, I began college classes. It's amazing that it took me so long to
find out how much I love learning. I saw several references to Ayn Rand an
Camille Paglia on the pages of HBI, I have a link to sites for both these
incredible women on my web page. How I wish that someone would have given
me a copy of "Atlas Shrugged" or "Sexual Personae" 20 yrs ago!!!
Well, it's better late than never, I am so greatful to women like
them, and you, who are working not only toward empowering women to
be all that they CAN be... but helping those of us who have always done
so in learning to REJECT the GUILT that society tries to heap on us for
being strong, capable women and recognizing that our "femininity" is NOT
the price we must pay for having a mind but a gift that we only truly begin
to value once we've learned to use the mind we've been given.
Yes! I want to read more from Real Life Heartless Bitches
