I have never been comfortable with the idea of working in a position where I would have to use my feminine wiles to earn a living. In high school, I was a member of the Civil Air Patrol-- a division of Boy Scouts of America. I wore combat boots and camouflage. When my friends all dyed their hair blonde I had to dye mine black. When the roots started growing back, I just cut it all off. The people who didn't understand would call me a dyke. I was content just knowing that I had better things to worry about than whether or not I could fit in. I joined the Navy when I was 18 and now I am a mall security guard while I take classes part-time at the local community college.

I am a single mom but I certainly don't use that to get any type of special entitlement. Most of the people I work with don't even know I have kids. I refuse to allow them to give me special treatment due to the fact that I am a woman and I am scared to imagine what kind of "chivalry" will be offered to me if they knew that I was a mom as well. I live in the deep south and guys think that treating a woman like a porcelain doll is some sign of respect. Fuck That. If you want to show me respect, treat me like an adult who is capable of handling his/her own. I am not a delicate flower!
