and Damned Proud of it!

Kim

Despite being brought up by a father who always assumed (and taught) that I should become a housewife, I have no intention of doing that and I am working as hard as I can to get the top grade at university. When he warned me that I'd get no financial support because "a degree is an unnecessary expenditure for a woman", I moved to a further city, applied for student loans and am entirely supporting myself. Actually, it's much easier than I thought it would be. I've got the top grade for my first year and I'm enjoying the experience.

I don't buy into media stereotypes of attractiveness, and it's encouraging to see that there are lots more women that don't. That's not to say I don't like to feel like I look good, but I have my own idea of what beauty is, and would never resort to plastic surgery, peroxide or layers of makeup. If I feel good I feel confident, and I only associate with people who value that confidence and what I have to say much more than they appreciate a vapid smile and a cute outfit. If I ever became like that, I think they'd shoot me. If they did, I think I'd be grateful.

I hate sexism more than anything in the world. In the office I used to work at, we were given appraisal forms which labelled all the men as "manager" and all the women as "assistant", me included. I didn't show up on Monday morning. My boss called, pissed off and yelling, so I told him I wouldn't go back unless he changed it. He hung up. Two weeks later, when he found out no-one else could do my job and paperwork was building up, he changed the forms and called back. That sense of vindication was unbeatable.

I've never been mistreated by a man. I've had relationships that ended badly, but not because of sexism or control issues. I go out when I want to, occasionally spend over budget, eat, say and do what I want (if it's within the confines of the law, it passes the test!), so if any man tried to control me more than I can control myself, it'd set off warning sirens immediately. I don't conform to a partner's lifestyle, or expect them to conform to mine.
