My mother was convinced she'd raised me to be a Southern belle, to be quiet and accepting and polite to even the rudest and most ignorant of people. She sent me up North with a box of grits, some cornbread mix, and her desire for me to not be influenced by "those impolite New Englanders". It took me a year before I stopped pretending that I was a doormat and started acting like a person.

I respect myself and I demand that others treat me with respect. I have no reason and see no reason to be polite to people who don't respect me. I am a human being, not a doormat or any other object. I won't let anyone treat me or anyone else that way. I will never act weak and mild in order to be liked. If someone doesn't like me for who I really am, then they weren't worth it anyway. Besides, why must I base my opinion and definition of myself on the opinions of others? I'm not going to pretend to be nice. I am done pretending. I am done acting like I don't matter. It's time to be ME.

It's been three years since I first went up North and since that time, I've never pretended to be anything but what I really am: a Bitch. It must break my mother's heart, but I won't let that break my spirit.
