When it comes to relationships, I don't believe in the admonition "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything." In any serious relationship, it is sometimes necessary to say things that aren't nice. What I think makes me a Heartless Bitch is my ability to do just that. Honesty has always come more naturally to me than politeness, to most of my family's chagrin. For example, once, when I visited my aunt, I took exception to the way she treated her son, and I told her that I was glad not to be her son. She wasn't happy to hear that, but I felt that it had to be said.
I think that politeness among relatives and even friends is overrated; what separates family and friends from strangers is an ability to entrust the former with the truth, no matter how much it hurts. In a long-term relationship, be it with a friend, a significant other, or a relative, no matter how much the truth may hurt, a lie will always hurt more in the long run.
