Robin
I was married to the king of manipulators. It took me 17 years to
realize I was just as screwed up as he was. That over that time I gave him
control or my life. I had given up all my basic adult rights. The following is a
letter that I wrote to my husband a few months before I threw him out. It is my
declaration of rights, rights I will never let any man take from me again.
1.) I have the right to be treated with respect.
2.) I have the right not to take responsibility for anyone
else's problems or bad behavior.
3.) I have the right to get angry.
4.) I have the right to say no.
5.) I have the right to make mistakes.
6.) I have the right to have my own feelings, opinions, and
convictions.
7.) I have the right to change my mind or to decide on a
different course of action.
8.) I have the right to negotiate for change.
9.) I have the right to ask for emotional support or
help.
10.) I have the right to protest unfair treatment or
criticism.
11.) I have the right to participate in activities that are important
to me.
12.) I have the right to have my own children respect me.
The only way I will be able to obtain these rights is to no longer
allow the following:
1.) I will no longer permit you to yell at me.
2.) I will no longer allow you to insult me.
3.) I will no longer allow you to constantly criticize me.
4.) I will no longer allow you to discount me.
5.) I will no longer allow you to control me and tell me what to
do.
6.) I will no longer allow you to humiliate me.
7.) I will no longer allow you put a price on everything I need or
want to do. I shouldn't have to jump through your hoops, before you will allow
me the things I need or the things I enjoy.
