I'm 50 years old, and I'm damned pleased with myself for finally becoming a grownup.

I'm a feminist who once actually took a husband's name for a whole year before coming to my senses. I'm a Heartless Bitch who put up with an abusive husband for nine years. In other words, I've learned my lessons. Thank God.

And now that I've made it this far, I have no leftover patience for stupidity, weakness and whining in others who are old enough to have learned better, too. My kids get my understanding. My peers have to earn my respect or be left out of my life.

When you start to get older, you start wondering why on earth you ever worked so hard to make people like you. Either they do, or they don't. And the ones who don't aren't worthy anyway. They can all hang out together without me.
