and Damned Proud of it!

Katharine

-My biggest pet peeve is when someone refuses to take the blame for their own misery. If you don't like the direction your life is going in, don't complain about it if you're not going to try to change it. For example, when an overweight person complains endlessly about their size but doesn't exercise and continues to patronize McDonald's on a regular basis. For christ's sake, if your weight bothers you, try to lose it! Your size isn't what's bothering everyone else; it's your whining. The most annoying one? When a girl drones endlessly about her boyfriend's/girlfriend's shortcomings, but won't just break up with the schmuck and spare us all the infinite list of inadequacies.

-I'll never lower myself to boost some loser's ego, and I'm quick to point it out when another woman does. I've seen far too many girls flush their pride down the toilet, pretending that they can't lift a piece of furniture or fix a computer program, all because they don't want to "seem threatening" to a guy. Are you kidding me? The proper intervention when you see this kind of "poor, pathetic little girl" behavior is to say as loudly as possible, "You helped me move out of my apartment last year, and you majored in computer engineering. I think that'll impress him more than pretending you have toothpick arms and a pint-size brain."

-I can't stand the stereotype that all feminists are completely obsessed with hot-shot careers, hate men, and are incapable of relating to other human beings besides "big hairy dykes." The point is not pursuing a career no matter what the cost, the point is doing what makes you happy, not what anyone else wants you or expects you to do. If that means majoring in English or women's studies and not biomedical engineering or statistics, then that's what you should go for. Same with men: the point isn't hating them, it's disillusioning the illusioned ones, having fun at the expense of the hopeless ones, and only being with one that meets your personal standards. Same goes for female partners, too. And hey, if big hairy dykes really are the only people I can relate to, then they're who I'll be friends with.

-Men who assume that their sexual comments will be perceived as flattering deserve several Kill Bill-style kicks in the balls. Do they not realize that what they're doing constitutes harassment? I finally got sick of being asked if my hair is "red all over." The last guy who thought that was an appropriate come-on got his beer poured all over his nasty bleached-blonde Billy Idol hairdo, and promptly kicked out of the music venue he was infesting when me and my friends made a ruckus. Too bad we couldn't have booted him ourselves without getting thrown out as well; we weren't about to miss The Detroit Cobras.

-I think that doing anything for the sole reason that you are, as a female, expected to do it is committing a crime against yourself. Let a man hit on me because he's in a position of authority (or drunkenness)? Hell no. Make marriage my number one priority because it's what is supposed to "make me happy"? Hell no. "Settle", in any form of the word? Hell no. Spare someone's feelings just to give them an often false sense of happiness? Hell no.
