Dan
Unlike what seems to be the status quo, I actually put thought behind my words and actions - which often offends, but people need to learn to both emulate and deal with honesty. I hold both myself and others accountable for the things I or they do and say - because superficial apologies and claims such as "it was a joke" don't often make up for making an ass of yourself, especially not at the cost of others.
It's unfortunate that values like pride, honesty, literacy and work ethic have become synonymous with pretension: but, if that's how we're going to define it, I can deal with being pretentious. I'm disgusted by the carelessness people ascribe to in order to try to escape responsibility and consequences of all sorts. As I get older, I've found that the situation just gets more and more absurd because no one seems to grow up, they just become ever more situated in their childishness. Case in point: I was sitting in a university lecture and when I mentioned the seriousness of a relationship in the context of being responsible to one another instead of being trapped in dependency, everyone (including the professor) laughed as if it was a joke. (People have no business being in a relationship if they're not independent.)
Having actual conversations is seen as taboo and an inconvenience for people now - whether in a romantic relationship, a friendship or simply casually. Any time I try to talk about political or moral issues that take more than minimal brain function, people tend to throw out any number of the various ways to say "shut up".
As a guy, I witness the rampant voracity of men often - you wouldn't believe the sorts of things they do right behind women's backs; you also wouldn't believe their expressions when I narrate what they're doing - or a woman's. I tend to be one of the very few guys (at least in my experience) who will actually speak up against piggishness instead of laughing along - maybe because I also tend to be one of the very few people who cares about more than feeling or looking good.
