I live in Las Vegas, a city that seems like it would be home to the Heartless Bitch. It is a place that doesn't suffer fools gladly, almost a New York of the West with a much harsher environment. If you can make it here you can make it anywhere. I've been here for almost three years and in that time have made it on my own with minimal help from family (I moved out here when I was 23, fresh from college and far away from my parents--just the way I wanted it). I've thrown myself headfirst into a heavily male dominated field: casino security. When I started there was only one other female on my shift. I've seen other women come and go, unable to handle the demands of the job. It's not the job for the "princess" type or someone unwilling to get her hands dirty. I hold my own with the rest of the guys and usually (male) customers think they can walk all over me because I'm female. I'm not sure what they're thinking but they get pretty damned surprised when I don't roll over and let them do whatever the hell they want. I guess my sweet and innocent look catches them off guard.
I don't understand the attitudes of a lot of the women who live out here. Constantly my male co-workers Bitch about their girlfriends, who often are the jealous, nagging type and have no reason to be. I even had a friend tell me he couldn't accept my phone number because his girlfriend would get jealous of another woman's number on his phone! I couldn't believe it, especially since a) he's a coworker, b) I'm not interested in him, c) I have a boyfriend whom I love and d) I'm not interested in him. Needless to say I don't talk to him much these days. I refuse to associate with people who can't stand up and assert themselves, even against so-called "loved ones." Yes, I have a boyfriend, but he doesn't rule my life. I have my friends, he has his friends and we have our friends. He doesn't dictate who is in my phone or who I go out with because I wouldn't be with him if he did.
