Christina
I am a young woman who loudly proclaims that she is a feminist to
anyone who will listen. My mother raised me to always work hard and keep
my own money, to fight hard for what I believe in, and to know that I am equal
to everyone else and should be treated as such. She is my greatest
influence and my hero. I am naturally a very shy person but I have learned
to speak out on the issues that mean something to me. Equality is one of
them.
I am very proud of the work that I have done for various feminist groups,
most recently the Feminist Union at my college. I attend a women's college
which is why I only refer to women being members of the Feminist Union
(FU). Of the year one of my favorite projects is the "Feminist" t-shirt we
make. The front simply says "Feminist..." and the back is a list of
statements that we as a group came up with. One of the women in the group
came up with the line "Because the moon is always female but no woman has been
there". The one that I thought of was less poetic but hopefully made just
as much of a point, "Because making choices about your own body is a human
right". Some of the phrases we came up with were silly or goofy, but the
point was to show an entire spectrum of thoughts and ideas that contribute to
why we define ourselves as feminists. We sold a few hundred of the
t-shirts, obviously to FU members and our parents/friends, but also to people
who hadn't even heard of our group but just loved the idea. We use the
money from the shirt drive to go to pro-life protests and counter protest or to
contribute to women's shelters or other similar causes.
The reason that I am telling you all this is because it really means
something to me personally. I have spent a lot of my time working on the
various activities of this group and I am proud of what we have
accomplished. This is part of my sense of being a Heartless Bitch.
To me being a Heartless Bitch is about having self-respect, strength,
intelligence, a sense of humor, and a feminist outlook (and I'm sure many other
things I've neglected to mention). But it is also about taking active
steps to change the world and get your message out to the public.
