I never knew I was a feminist until quite late in my life (sometime around high school graduation), mostly because my parents treated me as, well, a person, "girl" being a quite secondary detail. Until I was 15 I just assumed I was just the odd one, because I couldn't see why smart girls spent so much energy to look stupid and light-headed. It's when the life choices came up that I began to want to slap some of my best friends in the face : if they weren't going to stand up for what they wanted, who was?

Things got better with time (probably because the way of studies I chose is quite demanding, and weeded out those who wouldn't try anything challenging), but I still grind my teeth frequently at things some smart, successful and independent women allow to happen to them (like taking "No, It's too hard for you" for an answer from one's damn boy*friend*!!)

Don't mistake me : I grind my teeth at myself often enough too, but when my mum implores me to accept being driven home instead of riding the bus after dinner at her place, I concede more often than not. It riles me, but I know that she is a feminist if there ever was one, and that depriving her of sleep just to prove a point isn't that heroic. There are better occasions to stand up for what I consider as self-evident and I usually put them to good use.
