I have claimed and embraced the word Spinster. While the meaning
still remains "a woman who remains unmarried past the conventional age," in my
world, this is not a bad thing. I'm not a man-hater, but I'm perfectly content
in my own company, and in no way feel "incomplete." When the mood strikes,
however, I'm shamelessly erotic. I have a poster that hangs over my headboard
which reads, "It was dark when you arrived. It will be dark when you leave." I'm
a photographer, with my favorite subjects being nudes and erotica, on MY terms.
I'm out to prove that photos can be throbbingly erotic without crossing the
(fuzzy? sharp? you decide) dividing line between erotica and porn. I prefer to
shoot women and men who don't fall into the modern "ideals" of beauty. This
means no 19 year old stickbugs with plastic tits and every rib showing, and no
overly muscle-bound men with all their body hair removed. I photograph
personalities as well as bodies. THAT'S what makes it erotic. As a woman, I find
I have a distinct advantage over the male photographers I know. Simply put,
those I approach to model for me know I'm not some dirty old man looking to get
his rocks off. Of course, some men think that, "Would you be willing to
pose nude for me?" means, "Wanna fuck?" Often, they renege when they find out
that I'm truly just interested in photographing them, but I couldn't care less.
One day the likes of Helmut Newton and Annie Leibovitz will be saying of my
work, "Damn! I wish I'd taken that shot!"
