I am a Heartless Bitch because I value strength, independence, and intelligence over dependence, vanity, and conformity. I was raised by lovely supremely Bitchy women who have influenced my life in the most incredible way. I am forever grateful for the powerful women who have inspired me through their words and actions. Today, I am able to contribute to the world in my own inspired unique Bitchy way.
Since I live in the Midwest, I have plenty opportunities to be outspokenly Bitchy and separate from the mainstream. South Dakota recently passed an abortion ban, in which the language of the bill was horribly offensive and blatantly anti-woman. Before the bill passed, I sent letters and emails to my representative and various senators asking them not to vote for the ban. I also have volunteered for Planned Parenthood, gathering signatures, protesting, and attending seminars with other activists. At our protests, the anti-choice crowd also attends and they shout insults at us, but we do not let it bother us. My own beautiful Heartless Bitch mom gives great advice for these types of situations. She says, "Don't let the bastards get you down!" It is a philosophy I have also chosen to live by. So, I will continue to fight for what I believe in, even if I encounter opposition.
Another example of my Bitchy inspiration comes through teaching. Teaching is a natural vehicle for me to help others realize their dreams. Most of my students are twice my age and are returning to college after years of being out of the loop. My role is to encourage their intellectual development and improve their confidence. Many of my students are young mothers who have gone back to school so they can support their families and find meaningful work. I tell students to think of themselves as the sole breadwinner and not to be afraid to ask for what they are worth. In fact, I just negotiated a large raise for myself at my full-time job, which is always nice!
Finally, I am a Heartless Bitch because I think self-awareness is far more important than submitting to someone's preconceived role they have invented for you. Knowing yourself and being clear about who you are and what you want is far important than mindless people pleasing.
I believe I'd be a great addition to your Heartless Bitch community.
