I am a statistic gone happily awry.

Although I had my children as a teenager, I earned my graduate degree through my own hard work and intelligence. Surprised? I'm not. Contrary to popular belief, my brains did not slide out with the placenta of my firstborn.

It is not a compliment to tell me you are impressed with my work when it is followed with "for a girl who got pregnant as a teenager." I believe such comments come from those who are impressed by Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light.

I tend to judge the intelligence of people by two factors. One, do you read fluffy romance novels? (Hint, the answer to this is always no, always. Yes, even as "light" reading, the answer is no.) And two, do you like Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light? (Again, no, the answer is always no.)

I embrace the Heartless Bitch Manifesto as a woman who made it to her chosen place in life by knowing when to ask for help and when to say fuck off, by knowing respect is earned and that sometimes I just don't need to earn someone else's respect, and by knowing and loving who I am and who I am not.
