and Damned Proud of it!

Jules

I've been called a Heartless Bitch so many times by people who resent the fact that I do not require a penis--of my own, or someone else's--in order to be "a complete person", that I think it's about time I went ahead and became a card-carrying member. I happily fill my own time and space, and have always refused to rely on another person to keep me occupied or validate me. I like being single, and will probably someday be a single mom. It's not only men who resent this, but many women, too. Romance is a product that is manufactured and sold to the public in every medium available, and I refuse to purchase it if the cost is who I really am--and it usually is.

I'm an accomplished Hula dancer and I specialize in learning and performing the various Hula Pele; Hula dedicated to the volcano goddess, stories that depict the triumph of women over sexist pigs (literally: Pele often fought the pig-god Kamapua'a, the chauvinist who pursued her relentlessly,) and over other restrictions.

I also study Kung Fu, which not only benefits my health, but gives me the security of knowing that if someone puts their hands on me without my consent, I can break said hands without breaking a sweat. Most other women admire "Chicks Who Fight" as they say, but a few of them think that it makes me "masculine." Who really hates women in Kung Fu, though? A great many men in Kung Fu. I'm lucky to train with very helpful and wonderful training brothers, but in various tournaments and websites, some martial arts men hate the fact that women train in "their" sport. They say that women should "know their place" and that American women should be trained better--not to fight, but to please men. Some outright say that women in martial arts class should be beaten harder than men, so they "learn what it's like."

I don't stand for that. What I see in those cases are men who are afraid of women in general, but more afraid of women in "their" sport. Guess what? We're not going away. Every time I meet with martial artists outside of where I usually train, I run into those blatant attitudes. And I'm *still* not going away.

If that is what makes me a Heartless Bitch, then I will wear at least that one title with pride.
