I've survived and thrived for 25 years in male dominated professions (US Naval officer, dentist) without losing my self-respect, personal ethics, or credibility as a professional. Yes, I've swum with the sharks, and I've been in a dogfight or two. I've got plenty of scars to prove it. I've been gracious in victory, and stoic in defeat. I never let them see me sweat. I am independent: I take care of myself, and I always manage to land on my feet. I don't overly concern myself with what people may think of me personally, nor go out of my way to curry favor, as long as I have their respect where it counts. I would make a lousy politician. But, I don't want to make enemies, just let me do my job. I don't look for a fight; I like it better when everybody can just play nicely together. I much prefer indifference to hatred. Hatred is a big waste of energy, unless of course, we're talking about people who really deserve it. In my personal life, my friends know me as stalwart and true, funny, silly, adventurous, artistic, supportive, honest, and uncompromising in my intolerance of mean and ignorant people. Even my mother said it about me, at an early age, "Joyce does not suffer fools gladly." Thanks Mom, that's still true, though with maturity I'm learning to keep my mouth shut about it a little bit more often. LOL.
