I have finally fully awoken from my fantasy that most women are feminists at heart, and just need a little help organizing their priorities in order to see it. I refuse to downplay my abilities and idiosyncrasies in order to belong: I have wasted more than enough time befriending, and indulging the ignorance of, women who insist on pandering to sexist standards. My closest ally right now is actually my ex-husband/artistic collaborator.

Here is the latest thing in my community that has me becoming Heartless: I am a writer and musician who just performed an original feminist theatrical piece in the Boulder Fringe Festival (CO). Two weeks later, I am still reeling from the apparent preference (at least on part of the sponsoring organization) for performances that depend on embarrassingly sexist, objectifying elements to provide entertainment value. It didn't help that the John Carr circus was going on in town at the same time...
