I'm a Heartless Bitch that was saved. Saved by music no less; that sugar-coated media stew that trumps any other form of brain-washing, from little green men or no. I'm still a teenager with the annoying need for acceptance. I thirst for my nice little green corner in the pasture of teenage social heaven. I've fought back, though, by listening to some tasty hidden jewels of music and using my brain.
Well, now I am so cynical and sarcastic I'm surprised my suburban, preppy town has not tarred and feathered me. Everything about the modern U.S. life they follow sickens me: from the need for people to validate their entire love lives on a cold day in February; their joy at losing all self-worth independence as they swoon at a few Hallmark cards probably made by people lucky enough to eat half a muffin a day.
A year or two ago I would die if I went out without make-up. Well, so what if there a few veins on my eyelids and I have some acne? I do not need to cover my lips in fish scales and my face in oiled powder so those vain males will notice me at the mall. I can wait for a man who is mature and doesn't mind that I don't put colored dust on my eyelids.
As my vanity has been shattered, so has my co-dependence. I've been told now that I'll probably end up being alone, and I know that as my high school starts again I'll be alone, oh so very alone in all my classes. Well, so what? The approval of people who chew their cud while rambling down the lane in $175 pants to hide their nakedness in style means nothing to me. I'm a teenage girl whose managed to escape the herd because of my music and books, and so far I haven't been roped back in. I rather like keeping my brain in the on position.
